Wordless Wednesday: Swans on Black Brook

  1. What a lovely scene! You may already know this, but if not you may be interested in the fact that these are Mute Swans, which are not native but were originally imported as living decorations in parks. Sadly they have an unfortunate tendency to out-compete native swans.

  2. Rebecca, I did not know that. Thanks for telling us. I confess to admiring their beauty. It sounds like they're similar to the purple loosetrife that looks so lovely along our highways but chokes out native plants. Or the aggressive Asian shore crabs that are out-competing rock and green crabs in our area.

    How can you recognize them as mute swans?
